How to use Compress PDF
Choose or drop a PDF, set JPEG quality (about 0.50–0.92), then Compress PDF. Each page is drawn to a canvas, saved as JPEG, and packed into a new PDF. Compare original size vs compressed size, then download compressed.pdf. Password-protected files fail with an error. Files around 40 MB or 50+ pages may slow this tab. Nothing is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
How does Compress PDF shrink files?
It redraws each page as a JPEG image with pdf.js, then builds a new PDF with those images. It is not lossless, vector-preserving compression. Text may become non-selectable, and vector sharpness drops.
Will I still be able to select text?
Usually no. Pages become pictures of the original. Search, copy, and screen readers that relied on real text will not work the same way.
What happens with a password-protected PDF?
Compression stops with a clear error. Remove the password in another app, then try again. The file is never uploaded.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Rendering and PDF assembly run in your browser. Deskutil never receives the file.
Will every PDF get smaller?
Not always. Already-small scans or low-quality JPEGs may stay similar in size or even grow slightly. Lower the quality slider if you still need a smaller file. Files around 40 MB or 50+ pages can be slow.
